SAFETY CORNER: MINDFUL MOVEMENT
We’re always on the move at work – pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, bending. Whether flipping a spatula, moving a ski rack, or tightening a bolt, using our bodies to get things done is essential. This doesn’t always go the way we hope. Of 55 reported employee injuries this season, around 40% had “Movement” as the root cause.
These are almost all preventable injuries.
The “Movement” category doesn’t include slips on ice or falls on slope. It also doesn’t include objects that fall or hit someone.
In most cases, if the injured person had taken a mindful moment to be fully aware of their body and slow down a bit first, they could have accomplished the action unharmed.
What is Mindfulness? In simplest terms, it’s “pure sensory awareness.” Seeing, hearing, feeling the body’s signals rather than being lost in thought. Being PRESENT.
Our bodies need to be felt. If we slow down to be fully present, our bodies will reward us with better flow and greater strength. If we throw hurried and thoughtless commands at our bodies, flow is lost, the body feels abandoned, and injury is more likely to result.
Whatever your role, take a moment as you start your shift to fully settle into your body. Take those deep breaths. How does it feel? Would some stretching wake YOU up – so you can be Fully At Home?
STAY SAFE!
